Built around 1,180, Borgund Stave Church is like something out of a fairytale, with its porticoes, multi–level roof and towers, elaborately carved dragon heads on the roof ridge and scaly roof tiles.



The church is a fascinating sight, as it is located in the middle of the valley between impressive mountains, and the experience becomes no less fascinating when you enter the church. It's like stepping back in time hundreds of years: The medieval interior is virtually untouched by time, and both the wooden floor and the benches have been optimally preserved.



The church is one of the most authentic you can experience as it stands much as it did the day it was built – you can feel the history around you as you stand in the middle of the church hall where the churchgoers stood almost 1,000 years ago.



Follow the route of kings



Next to Borgund Stave Church is the visitor centre, where you can experience the exciting exhibition about the stave churches and their function in religious life in the Middle Ages. The visitor centre has also recently opened a new exhibition on "Unique Viking Finds" with finds from the 9th century.



Don't forget to take the opportunity to walk in the valley and enjoy the sight of the stave church from a distance. The church is also located right on one of Norway's Historical Routes, Vindhellavegen, which invites you to take a relaxing walk in the scenic surroundings. This route is part of the Kongevegen over Fillefjell, which was named Norway's most beautiful road in 2014. The road was opened in 1793 and was the first road between eastern and western Norway that was passable by wagon.

Borgund Stave Church – living medieval history

The easiest way to get to the viewpoint is on a guided sightseeing tour. The bus departs from Flåm and takes you safely through the road's hairpin bend to the unique viewing platform that extends 30 metres out from the mountainside.



Here you can enjoy a unique panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the beautiful fjord far below. The view takes most breath away and is probably one of the most photographed landscapes in Norway.



The trip to Stegastein is a fantastic excursion at any time of year, with the seasons each leaving their beautiful mark on the spectacular fjord landscape.

Stegastein viewpoint

Rallarvegen was built as a construction road in the late 1800s, when the Bergen railway was built, and since 1974 the road has been used as a cycle route. The tour goes along the railway and takes you through a unique high mountain landscape – with a total altitude difference of 1,340 metres.
If you start the tour in Flåm, you start at the lowest point of the tour and go uphill, so it is recommended to start in Haugastøl instead (there is a direct train connection from Flåm). If you don't want to bring your own bikes on the holiday, you can rent bikes in Haugastøl and return them at the tour end point in Flåm.
The tour takes you through a spectacular landscape of mountains, rivers, waterfalls, vistas, high mountain peaks, glaciers and lush valleys. Along the way, you can also admire the impressive bridges and walls that were built during construction more than 100 years ago. In other words, you can look forward to a truly unique natural and cultural experience that you will remember for a long time!

Cycling on Rallarvegen – Norway's most beautiful cycling route

Kjosfossen
One of the highlights of the trip is Kjosfossen. The mighty waterfall has a drop of 93 metres and is only accessible by train. In summer, you can see actresses dancing and singing in costumes about "huldrer" – beautiful female mythological creatures who were known to lure young men up into the mountains.



Ready for some ADRENALIN – bike or zipline?
If you want to get even closer to Norwegian nature, rent a mountain bike and ride all the way from Myrdal to Flåm again on the historic Rallarvegen – a fantastic ride past steep mountains, green valleys, vertical waterfalls and rushing rivers – and through 21 sharp hairpin bends. You can also choose to get off the River Railway at Vatnahalsen Station and take a ride down Scandinavia's longest zipline. It will definitely give you chills and sweat on your brow!! Length: 1381 metres. Top speed: approx. 100 km/h.



Scenic fjord cruise
Flåm lies on the shores of the Aurlandsfjord, and just around the corner lies one of Norway's most spectacular fjords: Nærøyfjorden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hop aboard a fjord cruise and have the experience of a lifetime as you sail through the unique, narrow fjord (in fact, the Nærøyfjorden is just 250 metres wide at its narrowest point) surrounded by snow–capped mountain peaks with an altitude of up to 1800 metres.



Viking adventure in Njadarheimr
Just 20 km from Flåm, a unique journey through time awaits you. In the "Viking valley" Njardarheimr you can experience an authentic Viking village, which shows how the Vikings lived 1000 years ago. The inhabitants live like real Vikings and show off their crafts and cooking skills while telling about life as Vikings. Of course, you can also try your hand at lots of exciting activities, from axe throwing and archery to historical crafts at the blacksmith or seamstress.



Stegastein viewpoint
650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord, the area's most spectacular viewpoint, Stegastein, awaits.
