The Flåm Railway – The World's Most Beautiful Railway

The easiest way to get to the viewpoint is on a guided sightseeing tour. The bus departs from Flåm and takes you safely through the road's hairpin bend to the unique viewing platform that extends 30 metres out from the mountainside.



Here you can enjoy a unique panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the beautiful fjord far below. The view takes most breath away and is probably one of the most photographed landscapes in Norway.



The trip to Stegastein is a fantastic excursion at any time of year, with the seasons each leaving their beautiful mark on the spectacular fjord landscape.

Stegastein viewpoint

Built around 1,180, Borgund Stave Church is like something out of a fairytale, with its porticoes, multi–level roof and towers, elaborately carved dragon heads on the roof ridge and scaly roof tiles.

The church is a fascinating sight, as it is located in the middle of the valley between impressive mountains, and the experience becomes no less fascinating when you enter the church. It's like stepping back in time hundreds of years: The medieval interior is virtually untouched by time, and both the wooden floor and the benches have been optimally preserved.

The church is one of the most authentic you can experience as it stands much as it did the day it was built – you can feel the history around you as you stand in the middle of the church hall where the churchgoers stood almost 1,000 years ago.

Next to Borgund Stave Church is the visitor centre, where you can experience the exciting exhibition about the stave churches and their function in religious life in the Middle Ages. The visitor centre has also recently opened a new exhibition on "Unique Viking Finds" with finds from the 9th century.

Don't forget to take the opportunity to walk in the valley and enjoy the sight of the stave church from a distance. The church is also located right on one of Norway's Historical Routes, Vindhellavegen, which invites you to take a relaxing walk in the scenic surroundings. This route is part of the Kongevegen over Fillefjell, which was named Norway's most beautiful road in 2014. The road was opened in 1793 and was the first road between eastern and western Norway that was passable by wagon.

The microbrewery Ægir Brewery is located in an extremely cosy Viking–style building From the outside, the building looks like a stave church, and from the inside it exudes inspiration from Norse mythology. The centrepiece of the pub is a unique nine metre high fireplace surrounded by dragon heads, wooden walls and benches covered in warm sheepskin.

Here you can enjoy a beer tasting where you taste different varieties of the locally brewed beer, which has won medals in several international competitions – or how about trying the brewery's other delicacies: snaps, gin, Viking mead and dancing water with alcohol?

You can also try the Viking–inspired menu with dishes that go back 1000 years – with Ægir beer, of course.

Beer tasting in Ægir BreweryPub

Rallarvegen was built as a construction road in the late 1800s, when the Bergen railway was built, and since 1974 the road has been used as a cycle route. The tour goes along the railway and takes you through a unique high mountain landscape – with a total altitude difference of 1,340 metres.

If you start the tour in Flåm, you start at the lowest point of the tour and go uphill, so it is recommended to start in Haugastøl instead (there is a direct train connection from Flåm). If you don't want to bring your own bikes on the holiday, you can rent bikes in Haugastøl and return them at the tour end point in Flåm.

The tour takes you through a spectacular landscape of mountains, rivers, waterfalls, vistas, high mountain peaks, glaciers and lush valleys. Along the way, you can also admire the impressive bridges and walls that were built during construction more than 100 years ago. In other words, you can look forward to a truly unique natural and cultural experience that you will remember for a long time!

Cycling on Rallarvegen – Norway's most beautiful cycling route

Board the electric ferry departing from Flåm – then sit back and look forward to a fantastic nature experience in Aurlandsfjorden and Nærøyfjorden.

The narrow fjords are surrounded by high, steep mountains and appear almost exactly as they did 100 years ago – wild, rugged and inaccessible, with few signs of human activity or impact.
Along the way, you'll pass beautiful waterfalls, cosy little villages, lonely farms clinging to the mountainsides, the beautiful Undredal, the inspiration for Arendelle in the Frost films – and, of course, plenty of unique mountain scenery.
At its narrowest point, Nærøyfjorden is just 250 metres wide, and the trip through the fjord is called one of the most dramatic fjord trips in Europe.

You can choose to either take a Nærøyfjord cruise round trip between Flåm and Gudvangen or go one way and take a scabintle bus back to Flåm, so you can see the beautiful terrain from the land side as well.

A snow boat hike is a great experience for the whole family. The hike starts at the quay in Flåm, where a bus takes you to the Stegastein viewpoint.

At Stegastein, the snow boot hike starts with a thorough instruction on how to walk with snow boot, and the guide tells about the nature and culture of the area, especially in winter along the beautiful fjord and the life on the small farms in the mountains.

Then you're ready to start the tour in the winter–covered landscape. The tour offers one spectacular sight after another as you see the fjord, Flåm and the village of Undredal, and not least the surrounding snow–capped mountains in bird's eye view. Hot drinks will be served along the way, and if the weather permits, the little ones can have a toboggan ride with a bum slider.

After the hike on the mountain, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the view from Stegastein before the bus returns to Flåm.

The free museum is located right by Flåm station and is open every afternoon. The exhibition includes an old locomotive, switches and drains, as well as a large number of photos, videos and other objects showing the impressive engineering work that led to the construction of the Flåms Railway from 1924–1940.

The river railway is only 20 km long, but goes through 20 tunnels with a total length of 5,692 metres. The tunnels were either blasted or chopped out by hand – a huge job, especially considering the tools and machinery of the time.

Visit the cosy museum and get a glimpse of what technology, engineering skills and ingenuity can lead to when a vision is turned into reality!

Are you ready to experience the wildest and most magnificent fjord landscape in Norway? If you want to get even closer to Norwegian nature, rent a mountain bike and ride all the way from Myrdal to Flåm again on the historic Rallarvegen – a fantastic ride past steep mountains, green valleys, vertical waterfalls and rushing rivers – and through 21 sharp hairpin bends. You can also choose to get off the River Railway at Vatnahalsen Station and take a ride down Scandinavia's longest zipline. It will definitely give you chills and sweat on your brow!!
