Hike to the Madonna in Eggedal

The hike to the fine granite statue "Madonnaen" in the middle of Norefjell's mountain landscape was voted Norway's best hiking route in 2018.

In the middle of nowhere on a mountain at an altitude of 1,020 metres is a rather unconventional location for a work of art – but nevertheless this is where you can visit the granite statue of the Madonna in Eggedal, around 40 minutes west of Norefjell.

The statue was erected in 2009 at the request of Anne Margrethe Bugge, who had donated a large part of the surrounding area to Sigdal Municipality as part of Norway's largest protected forest area, "Trillemarka".
The Madonna quickly became a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike, so in 2016 Nepalese Sherpas helped build a stone path to make the statue more accessible and minimise wear and tear on the area's fragile natural environment
The hike, which is about 6 km. round trip goes through beautiful mountain terrain and is accessible for young children as well as the elderly. You can choose to walk up and down the same way, but we recommend doing the tour as a round trip, taking one path from the car park up to the statue and the other back down. Both are easyto walk on and well marked.
As you pass Lake Svartjern, you can stop at the shelter, where there is both good seating and the opportunity to light a fire. There are also several seats at the top where you can enjoy a packed lunch or a cup of coffee from the thermos.
With spectacular scenery, fascinating traditional Sherpa crafts and an exciting cultural experience, it deservedly won the 2018 Audience Award for Norway's Best Tour Route.
