MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord

Facts

MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord represent a new era for ferry traffic between Norway and the EU. Each ship is 170 meters long, with a hull perfectly designed to give our passengers a smooth and stable sea voyage.

When MS Stavangerfjord began operating on 15 July 2013, she set a new standard of comfort and environmental protection at sea. Her identical sister ship began sailing in March 2014. The cruise ferries have capacity for around 1 500 passengers and 600 vehicles. Among the 306 cabins on board our guests can choose between eight different categories, from comfortable standard cabins to luxurious suites.

Distinctive signature

Whichever ship you travel on, you can be sure it is will be state of the art and will guarantee you a dream voyage at sea, whether you are looking for a cruise experience or traveling with us on your way to a longer vacation.

The Bergen Group Fosen shipyard has created a relaxing and stylish 1900s atmosphere, in close cooperation with Bergen Group Ship Design and architect Finn Falkum-Hansen. No detail has been spared in ensuring that today's traveller can revel in a modern version of the great ships of the past.

Racing forward on green gas

MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord are the first and largest cruise ferries in the world to use "single fuelled LNG engines", meaning that the ships are powered exclusively by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This environmental initiative means that Fjord Line lies in the forefront of new and more stringent emissions regulations, and the environmental benefits will be welcomed along the coast and in the four ports served by the cruise ferries.

MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord was given top score in the Environmental Ship Index in competition with over 3000 ships.

In June 2013 Fjord Line was awarded for energy efficiency.

The major environmental benefits are:

  • 92% reduction in NOx emissions
  • 23% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
  • 100% reduction in sulfur emissions
  • 98% reduction in particle emissions

Denmark's first LNG facilities is done

Denmark's first LNG tank and bunker facility is now ready for use in Hirtshals. This allows Fjord Line two new green cruise ferries to bunker in Denmark, but the LNG facility can also be used by other LNG-powered ships.

With Fjord Line's new LNG facility the company continues it´s green strategy, launched 5 years ago. With the opening of the new LNG facility, the potential of the green strategy is very serious and Fjord Line looks forward to new commercial opportunities.

With the LNG facility in Hirtshals Fjord Line can now bunker the new cruise ferries in both Denmark and Norway.

Fjord Line's green strategy must be seen in light of the IMO and EU sulfur directive for shipping, which entered into force on 1th of January 2015 which emphasizes environmental requirements for ships using ordinary fuel oil. The regulations forcing future shipping to think green, and it will probably get more ships to convert to LNG, which is significantly cleaner than conventional fuel oil as LNG emissions no sulfur and particulate matter.

The LNG facility is the first in Denmark, and will strengthen Hirtshals position as a leading port in environmentally friendly shipping. The port is strategically located in relation to trafficked shipping lanes, so Hirtshals have great chance to become the natulige port for future LNG-powered ships.

The new LNG facility has a capacity of 500 m3 of LNG and the Mann-Tek clutch and a transfer rate of 200 m3 per hour ensures that bunkringer LNG is safe, quick and efficient.

The LNG facility is designed and constructed by the Norwegian company Liquiline LNG. Intergas AS have overseen the construction and project management in cooperation with HMU A/S and Ramboll A/S has been the consulting engineers on the project. The project has received financial support from the EU by INEA (TEN-T).

The project is also currently in a study phase in order to be further developed in cooperation with HMN and Hirtshals so that if necessary there will be produced LNG and LBG (biogas) and included major storage facility in addition to the current tank to be used for future environmentally friendly shipping.

The construction of Denmark's first LNG facilities is well under way

Fjord Line, along with partners Liquiline, Intergas, HMU & Rambøll, have together been responsible for the design and installation that has now begun on the port of Hirtshals. The facilities will ensure that liquefied natural gas – LNG – is available for Fjord Line's ships, and can also be used by other shipping companies with vessels sailing on LNG.

The LNG bunker facilities consist of a 200 ton LNG storage tank and equipment. The tank can be filled from both LNG tanker trucks or from LNG tanker ships.

The project is supported by the EU under the TEN-T with MEUR 1.3

The Fjord Line ferries MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord are both sailing on environment friendly LNG and therefore contributes to a significant reduction of emissions to the atmosphere. The sulfur and particulate emissions are reduced by 100%, CO2 by 20-25% and nitrogen oxides by 90%.

Fjord Line is bunkering LNG in Risavika, Norway, but will in the future be able to bunker LNG from its own facility at the port of Hirtshals.

A possible future development of the LNG plant will increase accessibility not just in Hirtshals, but also in the rest of Denmark.

The plant will be commissioned by the end of June 2015.
