There are several ways of travelling with your dog, and the options vary depending on the destination and type of ship you are travelling on. Here, we’ve compiled the key information you need as a dog owner when bringing your canine companion onboard.

MS Stavangerfjord/MS Bergensfjord

On the route between Bergen, Stavanger, Hirtshals and Kristiansand onboard MS Bergensfjord or MS Stavangerfjord, you can choose between different tickets for your pet, such as “Pet in car”, booking a crate on deck or staying with your dog in a pet-friendly cabin.

How to book a ticket

If you are travelling between Bergen/Stavanger, Kristiansand and Hirtshals, you must book a dog crate in advance. This is done in step 7 “Travelers” in the booking process. The price is EUR 13 one way.

The dog can also be checked in as ‘Pet in car’ in the same step. The price is EUR 7 one way.

Onboard these ships, we offer special cabins where dogs are welcome—a handy option to consider for those embarking on an overnight sea journey. These cabins must be booked by phone.

NB: Dogs are not allowed in public areas inside the ship.

Walking your dog at sea

On MS Bergensfjord/MS Stavangerfjord, you can tend to your beloved pet on the car deck during the following times:

17/6-22/6 + 7/8-3/9:
Hirtshals-Kristiansand: 10.30 am.
Kristiansand-Hirtshals: 15.00.
Car tires open 6.00-6.30 before Stavanger.
Stavanger-Bergen: Tires open 9.45-10.15 and 12.00.
Bergen-Stavanger 16.00
Every evening 23.30

23/6-6/8 + 4/9-31/12:
Hirtshals–Kristiansand: at 11:30 (guests will be accompanied by the crew).
Kristiansand–Hirtshals: at 16:30 (guests will be accompanied by the crew) and at 18:30–18:55 (car deck open – port arrival).
Hirtshals–Stavanger: at 6:00–6:30 (car deck open – port arrival).
Stavanger–Bergen: at 9:45–10:15 (during high season) and at 12:00–12:30 (car deck open – port arrival).
Bergen–Stavanger at 16:00 (guests will be accompanied by the crew) and at 18:30–19:00 (car deck open – port arrival).
Every evening at 23:30 (guests will be accompanied by the crew).

Outside the scheduled port arrivals, one must contact the reception to be accompanied to the car deck by the crew.

Please note We do not recommend leaving your dog in the car during the summer as the car deck can become very warm.

Catamaran Fjord FSTR

Dog crates are not available onboard the ship between Kristiansand and Hirtshals on the catamaran Fjord FSTR. Dogs must be booked as pets under step 7 ‘Travellers’ when booking the tickets online. The fee for bringing your dog onboard is EUR 7 each way.

Dogs do not have to stay in the car during the trip. You can bring your dog to the afterdeck and the common room by the afterdeck.

Useful information before travelling

It is important that you as the dog owner familiarise yourself with the applicable rules and documentation required in the relevant country your are bringing your dog. When travelling with your dog to Denmark, for example, it’s a requirement that you:

Either travel with the dog yourself or have authorised the person who is accompanying the dog on the trip. The dog must also be microchipped, have a pet passport and valid rabies vaccine. Dog insurance with liability coverage is compulsory in Denmark. Please also note that certain dog breeds are illegal in Denmark. You can find more information about which breeds this applies to from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. You must also provide dog insurance with liability coverage, proof of vaccination, etc. Your vet can assist you with information about this before you travel.

Important information for anyone bringing a cat or dog into Norway from countries within the EU/EEA:Dogs and cats to Norway- EN

There are different rules for dogs and other animals in different countries, and it is important that you as a dog owner familiarise yourself with the rules that apply in the country you are taking your dog to. You should also be aware of the documents you need to take with you.

These rules apply to travelling with a dog to Norway:

The dog must be labelled with a tattoo or microchip
The dog must have an EU-approved pet passport
The dog must be older than three months and must be vaccinated against rabies
The dog must be treated against fox dwarf tapeworm (deworming)
When entering Norway with a pet, the animals and necessary documents must be presented to Customs for inspection without being asked. Walk or drive into the red zone at customs
Please note that there is a separate ban on the import of dog breeds that are prohibited in Norway
If you are bringing more than five animals for the purposes of participating in a competition, and you have documentation of this, they must fulfil the requirements that apply to the import of more than five animals for exhibitions or other events
