Myrkdalen – a holiday gem at the heart of Fjord Norway

Whether you are looking for top-class nature experiences or exciting and active family adventures, Myrkdalen has something to offer holidaymakers of all ages.

Whether it's first-rate experiences in natural surroundings, thrills and excitement in some unusual extreme sports, or simply a relaxing holiday for the whole family, Myrkdalen has something to offer holidaymakers of all ages.

Hike & Bike for the whole family

The area in and around Myrkdalen offers a variety of wonderful hiking routes. For example, you can take the Myrkdalsekspressen chairlift 400 metres up the mountain. From the summit at 860 metres above sea level, you have fantastic views over the surrounding area. An ideal starting point for hikes to Finnbunuten, Mørkvesstølen, Svortetjødn and Vetlebotn.

The high mountain landscape of Vikafjellet is only 15 minutes by car from Myrkdalen. Here you will find lots of hiking trails for families with children in green and fertile surroundings. The trail along the four mountain lakes in Sendedalen is ideal for younger children. The terrain here is only gently undulating and if you need to cool off on a warm summer day, the unspoilt beaches by the lakes are tempting.

The mountain hotel at Myrkdalen Fjellandsby also offers a variety of cycling experiences for kids. Directly behind the hotel you will find three cycle paths with different levels of difficulty where you can practise your cycling skills. There is also an 850-m2 cross-country mountain bike park with hills, bends, humps and dips where you can demonstrate your courage. In Myrkdalen you can hire bicycles with a 20% discount.

Summit tour with fjord views

For experienced hikers, the area between Myrkdalen and Flåm also offers fantastic tours of the summits with spectacular views. For example, you can take on the challenge of climbing the two peaks Bakkanosi (1398 m) and Breiskrednosi. After a strenuous hike, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views over Nærøyfjord, which is also on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Visit the Viking village of Njadarheimr

If you are travelling with children who love adventure, a visit to a real Viking village is an absolute must. About 35 minutes' drive from Myrkdalen, you can travel back in time and experience first hand how the Vikings lived here a thousand years ago. In this “living” museum, you can take a guided tour through the village and join in with the activities in 20 reconstructed buildings. Awaken the Viking chief in you and try your hand at archery, axe throwing and other Viking games.

Flåmsbana: the world's most beautiful railway line

This impressive railway line winds its way along the steep mountain ridges from Flåm to Myrdal, climbing a whopping 866 metres on a route that is only 20 km long. Sit back and enjoy the views over mountains, valleys, rivers, picturesque villages and idyllic country estates that will leave you speechless. It is no surprise that Lonely Planet Traveller named Flåmsbana the “most beautiful railway line in the world”.

Adrenaline or relaxation

Just 45 minutes by car from Myrkdalen is one of Norway's most spectacular fjords: the Nærøyfjord, which is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are various ways to explore this unique, narrow fjord. Hop on board a fjord excursion boat and enjoy panoramic views of the 1800-metre snow-covered mountain peaks as you glide slowly into the narrow fjord. Hire a kayak and get right up close to the shoreline along the quiet, deep fjord. Or notice the butterflies in your stomach as you whizz along the fjord on a RIB boat. Your temperament – your choice.

Also worthy of a mention...

... is Myrkdalen's riding centre right next to Hotel Myrkdalen Fjellandsby, which offers riding lessons for children within the centre or in the surrounding area.
