The archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique nature. The fjord is surrounded by steep mountainsides, whose peaks rise as high as 1,800 metres, and they are often covered in snow for much of the year.
The Fjord cruise starts in Gudvangen and lasts around two hours each way from Gudvangen to Flåm. The trip is a pearl of beautiful nature experiences – sit back and enjoy the sight of mountainsides, snow–capped peaks, fascinating waterfalls, vast forests and cosy settlements along the shores of the narrow, spectacular fjord.
The ferries used on the fjord cruise are an experience in themselves – they are specially designed for the area and the inspiration from the Norwegian landscape is evident in the winding walkways, which provide ample opportunity to see the surroundings from different angles along the way.

Fjord cruise on Nærøyfjorden

Norway offers plenty of spectacular natural experiences – and Bordalsgjelet is a very special and accessible one.



The short and easy hike through Bordalsgjelet starts on a dirt road along Vangsvatnet and takes you over the bridge over the Vosso river and further into the impressive gorge.



Here, the forces of nature are felt at close quarters as water gushes between dark rocks and through giant potholes created by ice and rivers over millennia.



The path is well maintained and the walk is around 5 km long. Along the way, take a rest on one of the area's benches and be sure to take advantage of the many viewpoints – each one offers a new fascinating view of the beautiful area.



Bordalsgjelet – fascinating walk near the Voss town centre.

Looking for an affordable hike that still brings you from one spectacular view after another? Then set course for Kiellandbu – "The Magic Cabin".



The tour is around ten km long round trip and can be done by the whole family. You'll pass through gently undulating terrain with a steady gradient, so you can set your own pace and just enjoy the ride. The trail takes you through a lush mountain valley, along a river and lake, before reaching the flat area that takes you right up to Kiellandbu cabin, which stands right on the edge of a steep slope.



From here you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains – but the most spectacular view is towards the Fykesund fjord and the chalk–white Folgefonna icebreaker in the distance.



Enjoy the packed lunch at the beautiful sight before you start the trip back to Voss. You can either return the same way or head for Sveindalsnuten (1,065 m.a.s.l.) for an even more spectacular view.



Kiellandbu Cabin is one of the Norwegian Tourist Association's cabins, so it's possible to book accommodation in the cabin in advance (or just hope there are beds available when you arrive) if you fancy even more time in this magical place.

Hike to Kiellandbu

The gondola is the first and most modern gondola in Northern Europe and takes you to the Hangur summit – 820 m.a.s.l. – in some nine minutes to watch the landscape unfold around you as you rise.
At the top, you can either go on one of the area's hikes or simply explore the beautiful terrain near the gondola station. There are both pleasant trails suitable for the youngest and longer and more challenging walks for experienced hikers. There's even a special "panoramic loop" with photo frames, a varde and several hangar shoes – not a kind of shoe, as the name might suggest, but a kind of swing – so you can take home a special holiday photo.
When hunger strikes, visit the atmospheric new Hangurstoppen restaurant, which seats 450 and is Voss' largest restaurant. Hangurstoppen serves food and drinks based on local produce, which you can enjoy along with a unique 360–degree view of the mountain.
Don't be afraid of bad weather – in fact, the trip is even more unique on cloudy or foggy days, as the gondola takes you through the clouds and up into the sun, where the mountain peak reveals itself to you – an experience that gives most people goose bumps!

Voss Gondola – The spectacular way to Hangurstoppen

On the tour, you will see how the Vikings lived and travelled, see their boats, houses, weapons and tools, hear their story and experience how the Viking Age has left its mark even today.
Take a walk among the more than 20 houses of the Viking village and see the craftsmen in action, or try your hand at archery, axe throwing or Viking games – because in Njardarheimr, history is brought to life all around you.
The local Vikings will be happy to tell you about their life, religion and crafts, and you can finish off your visit by tasting the freshly prepared Viking dishes made from authentic ingredients – cooked over a fire, of course.

The Viking village of Njardarheimr

In the VossVind wind tunnel you can experience what it's like to fly as Superman. The experience is for all ages and requires no special training or fitness – in fact, the oldest person to try the experience was 100 years old!
After a basic instruction, your personal instructor leads you into the wind tunnel and then the flight begins. The wind starts and you spread your "wings" and float freely in the air for two times a minute and a half – a fascinating experience for all ages!

VossVind – Here everyone can fly!

Close to the centre of Voss you will find the Voss Folk Museum – Mølstertunet, beautifully situated on a hilltop overlooking Vossevatnet.
Here you can take a pleasant journey through time among the museum's 16 small and large houses, all showing different aspects of life on a farm in Voss several hundred years ago.
Children and adults can look forward to an exciting and fun day, where you can try your hand at traditional games as well as work tasks or dressing up in historical clothes – can today's children manage to walk in the wooden shoes of the past?
In one of the buildings, you can learn more about life on the farm over the last 500 years, including examples of the beautiful local drinking vessels "Vossakjenger".
In addition to Mølstertunet, Voss Folkemuseum covers Oppheim old rectory, 26 km from Vossevangen, and Nesheimstunet Chiefdom, 16 km from Vossevangen, both of which are also worth a visit.

Voss town centre is cosy with a multitude of small shops – from specialty shops with all kinds of sports and outdoor equipment to small cosy shops with Norwegian souvenirs, arts and crafts, fashion or handicrafts.
When hunger strikes, you can enjoy lunch in one of the town's many cafés or take your food along for a picnic on the lakeshore. If you have a sweet tooth to indulge, you can order an Afternoon Tea with the patisserie's exquisite cakes.

Bordalsgjelet and Tvindefossen



Within walking distance of the centre of Voss, a unique natural experience awaits: the spectacular Bordalsgjelet gorge. A little further away, twelve km from the centre, one of Norway's most famous waterfalls awaits: the Tvindefossen. The wide and around 150–metre waterfall with its gradual drop is a spectacular sight that attracts many tourists every year.



Gondola lift to Hangurstoppen




In July 2019, one of Voss' newest attractions opened: the Voss Gondola, the largest and most modern gondola in Northern Europe. The amazing ride takes you to the Hangar Top in just nine minutes. From here you can enjoy panoramic views of the mountains surrounding Voss, and the area is a starting point for both short and long hikes in the beautiful mountain landscape. Particularly popular, but also challenging, is the 20km hike to Lønahorgi, from where on a clear day you can see as many as four icebergs.



In the heart of Norway's most beautiful fjords



Located between two of Norway's most beautiful fjords, Sognefjorden and Hardangerfjorden – which areabout a two–hour drive, whichever you choose to visit – Voss is an obvious starting point for a day trip to some of the country's most spectacular scenery. But Nærøyfjorden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also within reach: About an hour's drive north of Voss awaits the mountain peak of Bakkanosi, which at 1,300 metres above sea level offers what some call the country's best view of Nærøyfjorden.



Live like a Viking in Njadarheimr




If you have adventurous children on holiday, a visit to a real Viking village is a must. North of Voss you can travel back in time a thousand years and feel for yourself how the Vikings lived. In the living museum, you can both take a guided tour through the village and become part of the activities in the more than 20 reconstructed buildings. You can also find your inner Viking warrior as you try your hand at archery, axe throwing and Viking games. The village is also right on the shores of Nærøyfjorden, so most people combine a visit with a walk along the World Heritage fjord.
